1896. október 27-ei alapítása óta a Budapesti Fegyház és Börtön speciális funkciója a bv. intézetek közötti fogvatartotti szállítások, mozgatások biztosítása, ebből ered köznyelvi elnevezése is. A „Gyűjtő” napjainkban is az országos körszállítások helyszínéül szolgál, amelyek alkalmával hétfőnként az ország összes bv. intézetéből közel 1500 fogvatartottat szállítanak ide, hogy aztán továbbszállítsák őket a célintézetekbe.
