Life of Saint Adrian
Head public servant of Emperor Maximianus, military officer. He converted during the persecution of Christians and has suffered martyrdom. The Slav Prince Pribina has dedicated a church and a monastery to him at Zalavár.
In Hungary, St. Adrian is venerated among the earliest of church patron saints. He is mostly depicted as a sitting figure in civil garments, holding his severed right hand in his left, but he is depicted in armor as a young warrior as well. His attributes: anvil, sword, axe, banner, severed arm and the lion, as he was a brave defender of the Christian faith. According to sources available to us the military officer born in Anatolia has served in Nicomedia during the rule of Emperor Maximianus. St. Adrian was put into prison because of his Christian faith around 304, was executed, his leg broken on an anvil and his arms severed with axes. His wife, Natalia has secretly stolen one arm of St. Adrian. His remains were transferred to Constantinople and then in the 7th century to Rome.
